Preparing for TEFAF Online 2020: Upcoming Exhibitor Highlights

TEFAF Online 2020 is approaching fast. Here are the details on how the new platform will work and exhibitor highlights for the upcoming fair.

TEFAF, the world’s premier fine art and antiques fair, recently announced that it will be introducing a new online platform for exhibitors and collectors: TEFAF Online. Due to health and safety concerns because of COVID-19, the TEFAF Online platform will help ensure that the annual fair can take place safely without the risks of spreading the disease at a large gathering. 

 

TEFAF Online will take place during the timeslot of New York Fall. It will run from November 1st-4th, with two preview days on October 30th and 31st. You can register for TEFAF Online here.

A Summary Of How TEFAF Online Will Work

The new online art fair will showcase works from 300 exhibitors from TEFAF’s international community. Each exhibitor will be allowed to submit one art object each for the 2020 Online Fall fair in a new “masterpiece” format. Each item submitted will have a description, video and images that contextualize each item. There will also be an interactive tool that will allow the exhibitors to engage directly with the collectors, dealers and art enthusiasts at the 2020 fair.

 

Each submitted item will be subject to TEFAF’s new online vetting process. While the vetting committee will not be viewing any items in-person, TEFAF has instated a set of rigorous online vetting guidelines. Each exhibitor is required to upload high-resolution images of their submission, a full description, verification reports, any conservation/treatment/condition documentation and records of importation or exportation. The vetting committee will then authenticate the items and, if they pass, they will be put up on view.

TEFAF has released a First Look for TEFAF Online 2020 with highlights for the upcoming November fair. The highlights include leading international galleries and dealers with pieces spanning thousands of years of art history. Below are some of the upcoming exhibitors and their items.

Paul Cézanne was a French Post-Impressionist painter whose work significantly contributed to the transition into the 20th-century avant-garde. His work is recognizable by its rough brushstrokes and bold use of color that paved the way for future experimentation with painting. He is associated with 19th-century Impressionism and Cubism and influenced notable artists such as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso

Donald Judd was a postwar American artist who was known for his work in Minimalism and Conceptual art. He was interested in architecture and the deliberate use of negative space. This profoundly influenced his easily recognizable “stacks” and “progressions” installation sculptures, which feature simple, box-like forms and block color designs. Judd has worked alongside other notable artists including Dan Flavin and John Chamberlain.

Lucas Cranach the Elder, born Lucas Müller, was one of the most important and influential artists in Germany during the 16th century. His body of work, including paintings, woodcuts and altarpieces, is heavily associated with Protestant Reformation, religion and mythology. His Portrait of John Frederick I, Elector of Saxony sold in a Christie’s sale in 2018 for $7.7 million, making it one of the most expensive Old Master paintings to sell at auction in the past 5 years

Notes: Each element of this monumental cast-iron sculpture was hand-cast in a two-year process. 

Ai Weiwei is a Chinese activist and contemporary artist whose installation art, videos, sculptures and other media question modern ideologies. Having grown up in harsh conditions due to his father’s exile, Weiwei has been openly critical of the Chinese government, leading to his arrest and harassment. He is considered one of the most well-known, prolific and provocative modern artists today.

Notes: This is a rare example of Maloof’s unconventional woodworking style. It was given to Gail Fredell by the artists and is inscribed “ For Gail / my love and appreciation for you and your work. Love / Blessings / Peace Sam Maloof.”

Sam Maloof was a well-known American woodworker and furniture designer. He is also the first craftsman to receive a MacArthur fellowship. His unconventional style gained him notoriety and he is remembered as a leading figure in the postwar Arts & Crafts movement in America. His work is exhibited in significant institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
