While most countries stick to simple tricolor or two-tone geometry on their national flags, some countries break the rules of vexillology and fill their flags with color. Straying from such guidelines sometimes works, and the flag becomes an easily identifiable aesthetic symbol. Other times, overly colorful designs draw derision and are retroactively considered mistakes.

But which flag actually has the most colors?

Belize Holds the Record for Its Colorful Standard

The tiny Central American country of Belize holds the record for the most number of colors in its flag. Adopted on September 21, 1981, on the day it gained independence, the flag of Belize presents a difficult question for counting the number of colors, as it is often displayed with shades or hues, and it is difficult to determine where one color ends and the next begins; the government of Belize does not give an official count.

Some sources cite as few as eight, while others push the number up as high as 19, with 12 being the most commonly cited number. These are distinctions between solid colors and hues. Nevertheless, from a distance, the flag does not look that colorful. It is a blue field with two horizontal red stripes. The seal in the center, however, has a slew of colors, depicting the coat of arms which recalls the country’s logging industry. It features shades of brown, green, blue, red, and yellow.

Dominica and the Rare Purple Parrot Emblem

The flag of Dominica contains seven colors and depicts its national bird, the sisserou parrot. What’s unusual about this is that the bird has purple feathers and is depicted as such on the flag, making Dominica one of the few countries with purple on its flag. The parrot sits on a red disc decorated with green stars, centered on a green field with a yellow, black, and white cross.

South Africa and the Symbol of the Rainbow Nation

Oddly enough, Guinness states that the most colorful flag in the world is that of South Africa, with six colors. This exposes the problematic inconsistency of the methodology used to count colors.

The South African flag was adopted on April 27, 1994—the day on which the first fully democratic elections took place in post-apartheid South Africa. The flag’s design incorporates a horizontal Y-shape and draws from the colors of the old flag as well as those of the African National Congress, the organization and party that facilitated the dismantling of apartheid.

There are no official meanings attributed to the colors; interpretations are open— a symbolic representation of individual freedom in determining what the nation means.

The World’s Most Vibrant Flags That Skip Complex Coats of Arms

As in the examples of Belize and many others, the coats of arms on flags can give flags the technical distinction of being extremely colorful. However, there are several countries with colorful flags that don’t have state seals or other complex imagery.

Zimbabwe, Seychelles, Comoros, Antigua and Barbuda, Namibia and the Central African Republic all have five colors, while South Sudan matches South Africa’s record with six—yet doesn’t get the same recognition as a “Rainbow Flag!”

Flags With Complex Seals: From Rainbows to Pink Lions

If one factors coats of arms into flag designs, then there are several country flags that, like Belize, can be considered more colorful than South Africa and South Sudan. Nicaragua and El Salvador have actual rainbows in their coats of arms, while Spain has a total of eight colors and features a pink lion! The only other national flag with pink is Mexico, which has pink prickly pears on its emblem.
